“I’ve noticed that handspun art yarn is often admired from a distance rather than making itself useful. I’m here to inspire you with all the different ways you can use art yarn, whether you’re a spinner and crafter or not.” –Tabitha, owner and artisan at ArtSpinnings
ArtSpinnings is our sister-in-law’s handmade artisan fiber based in Wilmington, NC. The shop’s raw fiber comes from our farm’s Satin Angora rabbits and other small farms. ArtSpinnings products are always handmade, handspun, hand-dyed, and ethically sourced. They are the perfect final touch for high quality crafting and ready to ship to you.
What is art yarn?
Art yarn, or artisan yarn, is a high quality custom textured handspun yarn. Every skein is unique and one-of-a-kind. Art yarn is frequently used as an embellishment for many kinds of fiber projects.
Giant pom-poms can be a great accessory to put a finishing touch on your project. Use them to top a hat, add them to the ties of a poncho, use them as holiday ornaments, or add one to your handbag’s zipper pull.
Art yarn samplers:
Samplers provide a variety of textures and thicknesses to help add variety to a project. These short lengths can be ideal for embellishment (such as adding an edging to a small knitted project). You can also use them for applique, scrapbooking, jewelry making, or giftwrapping.
Mini art yarn skeins:
A mini skein provides several yards of yarn for small projects. You can use these skeins to create doll hair, tassels, fringes, hair extensions, or small knitted or crocheted items such as ornaments, cozies, bookmarks, and more.
Art yarn skeins:
Our small and medium skeins provide a variety of lengths of different styles of handmade yarn. Depending on the yardage available, you could create fingerless gloves, a scarf or hat, a pillow front, a cowl, a kerchief, or a mini shawl. These skeins are also great for woven wall hangings and other types of fiber art.
ArtSpinnings uses high quality fiber from several species of fiber animals. Each ArtSpinnings creation is carefully designed to showcase the unique properties of its materials. Here is ArtSpinning’s list of fibers that are available at Miss Lilly’s:
Alpaca is strong and highly durable, allowing you to create long-lasting garments. It’s fluffy and usually super soft, and it comes in twenty-two different natural colors. Alpaca is an eco-friendly fiber since alpacas are gentler on pastures than sheep and produce less methane. In addition, their fiber doesn’t require as much processing, or incur as much wastage, as wool does.
Angora is next-to-skin soft and adds a beautiful “halo” of fluff to a project. It’s extremely lightweight and cozy, as well as being one of the warmest fibers in the world! Our angora is lovingly raised in Suffolk, Virginia at Cotton Patch Farms.
Wool comes in dozens of forms, colors, and textures, from fine and crimpy to silky, curly locks, depending on the breed of the sheep. For example, Merino sheep provide extra-fine wool for cozy, squishy yarn that’s next-to-skin soft, and Gotland sheep provide adorable curly locks with a natural color gradient.
Mohair is known for its strength, its unique shine, and its texture. Mohair is curly and has a smooth, silky feel, in addition to being lightweight and highly durable. It provides a distinctive luster to projects and it takes dye extremely well.
